Why Trauma Informed Sports Coaching? Part 1

With over 50% UK children experiencing trauma and a high drop-out rate in youth sports – could it be that we don’t coach in a way that makes it easy to access for those 50%+?

Of course there are lots of factors but without being able to adapt our approach to accommodate how trauma can affect the developing brain, and how that impacts their ability to engage, we are potentially excluding children who would benefit most from sport and could be exceptionally good athletes.

I often hear coaches say they like youths who are coachable, but what if it’s the approach that stops them being ‘coachable’?

This isn’t about watering down what we do, or softening it – quite the opposite, it’s upping our skills so we can do what we need to get each child to a state of ‘coachable’ rather than dismissing them.

There’s always more we can learn, if we ourselves are ‘coachable’ 😊 that’s what makes it so fun.
